| For a second year in a year, a tasty chicken
dish marinated in fruit juices and served on a bed of rice and tropical
fruit from Clark Memorial Hospital’s cafeteria won the Taste of
Jeffersonville. Clark Memorial is the event’s only back-to-back winner in the festival’s seven-year history. The hospital’s food and nutrition team’s Caribbean jerk chicken was named the top dish in the local competition, beating out more than 15 other local restaurants. The contest was held May 17. “Anyone who has dined in the hospital’s cafeteria is aware of Gene Oliver’s (director of food and nutrition) culinary talents,” says Martin Padgett, Clark Memorial CEO and president. “Every day is a dining treat. We are very proud of Gene and his team of catering professionals.” Going into this year’s event, Oliver expected the competition to be a little stiffer. But Oliver, who has been in the restaurant industry for more than 25 years, was prepared. “The other participants definitely brought their A games,” he says. “I have to congratulate each and every one of them.” The Caribbean jerk chicken is regularly served in the hospital’s cafeteria since Oliver came to Clark Memorial in the spring of 2005. And what about a three-peat for next year? “I have some ideas for next year,” Oliver says with a laugh. |
