The hospital hosted the art contest to raise the awareness of breast cancer in the community. The 2001 Breast Cancer Awareness Art Contest was developed to educate women in the community on the prevention and treatment options available at the Cancer Care Place, while honoring those women who are currently fighting the disease.

“Our goal is to reach areas of the community that may not be aware that early detection can increase the chances of survival when diagnosed early,” says Annessa Mitchell, Cancer Care Nurse for Clark Memorial Hospital.

Three honorable mention awards were presented to Greenville, Ind. artist Rochelle Hammond, Jeffersonville artist Hope Jacobs, and Louisville artist Cliff Wieck.

A panel of local art experts and enthusiasts reviewed the entries and chose the winning selection. The judging panel included Barbara Friedland, photo coordinator for Artopia; Susan Moffett, Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University Southeast; Sally Newkirk, Director for the Carnegie Center for Art and History; Beth Rudwell, Board Member of the Southern Indiana Art Association; Cynthia Torp, President of Solid Light; Sue Cravens-Phillips, Service Line Director for Clark Memorial Hospital; and Cindy Dicken, Marketing and Public Relations Director for Clark Memorial Hospital.

Sweatt’s winning piece was dedicated to Valerie Wilson, a good friend of the artist who has been suffering with a severe illness and has been a frequent patient at Clark Memorial Hospital.

“The unbelievable strength and courage she shows in her daily fight inspires me,” he says. “In the face of adversity, she continues to shine, something I really respect and admire.”

Sweatt has had gallery representation at the E/S Gallery. Louisville Visual Art Association, and the Charles Andrew Gallery in Carlisle, PA.

According to the American Cancer Society, there will be about 192,200 new cases of invasive breast cancer in the year 2001 among women in this country and about 40,600 deaths from the disease. Breast cancer also occurs among men, although much less often.
