What is family medicine?

A family practice provides complete, ongoing health care for you and your family from infants to the elderly, and ever stage of life in between.

A family practice emphasizes preventative care and a long-term relationship between you and your physician.

Family physicians complete a three-year residency where they receive inpatient and outpatient training in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine, psychiatry and neurology, surgery, community medicine and more. This extensive training equips family physicians to deliver a wide spectrum of acute, chronic and preventive medical care services, and provide primary care for everything from heart disease, stroke or hypertension to diabetes, cancer or asthma.

What is internal medicine?

A doctor of internal medicine provides comprehensive health care for adults, with special study and training in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of adult diseases.

Internists can help with whatever problems you may experience from the ordinary and obvious to the rare and complex. At least three of their seven years of medical school focus on solving complicated diagnostic problems and treating severe chronic illnesses or situations where more than one illness may strike at the same time.

Doctors of internal medicine also have deep knowledge in areas such as wellness, women's health, substance abuse and mental health, and are skilled in the treatment of common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system and reproductive organs.

In short, a doctor of internal medicine provides complete care throughout life, offering guidance on health and wellness, diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease, and coordination of treatment with medical specialists such as surgeons and obstetricians.
