This work is inspired by the courage of two women: my grandmother, Marie, and my sister-in-law, Auli. Aulis disease is in remission, and although the fight has taken its toll, in energy and enthusiasm, she still is able to make a good home for my brother and various other relatives. My grandmother was a victim of several kinds of cancer. Although as long as my grandfather was alive, she seemed to gain strength from his exuberant spirit. At his death, she quickly deteriorated -- a sign to me that the spirit, if strong, can keep even the most horrific fates at bay. Our lives are webs of love, deeds, and commitments. The snapping of just a single strand or two can be fatal.
