ECHOCARDIOGRAM
This safe, painless non-surgical procedure uses sound waves that will show any abnormalities in the muscles or valves of your heart. No needles or radiation are used during the procedure, which usually takes about 30 minutes. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart.

STRESS TEST
Sometimes called a treadmill test, this low risk evaluation helps us determine how well your heart does when it is working. During the test you are monitored as you walk on a treadmill while its speed and angle are increased. We will be watching your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, electrocardiogram (EKG) and how tired you get. This test lets us check your arteries to make sure the blood flow to your heart isn’t reduced, and it helps us identify coronary artery disease or a heart attack.

We may use myocardial perfusion imaging to get a more detailed picture of your heart during your stress test. Radioisotope tracers are injected through an IV, and a special camera captures images of your heart right after the stress test and when you’re at rest. Comparing the two helps us see defects in blood supply to your heart muscle, including scarring.

CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION
During this common and relatively painless outpatient procedure, a long flexible tube is inserted into
a large blood vessel in your leg or arm and guided up into your heart. Dye is injected, and pictures
are then taken of your heart’s blood vessels to help us identify blockages, problems with heart valves
or even holes in your heart. Local anesthetic ensures your comfort, and the entire process takes just 30 minutes or less.

ANGIOPLASTY
Angioplasty is an inpatient procedure used to improve blood flow in blocked arteries. A slender tube is inserted as in cardiac catheterization, with a second tube inserted into a coronary artery. A small wire is guided through the tube with a balloon that is expanded in the area of blockage. This stretches the artery to improve blood flow. Angioplasty takes about an hour, and you typically return
home the following day.

ATHERECTOMY
An atherectomy is designed to improve blood flow to the heart by removing build-up inside the arteries that lead to the heart. During atherectomy, a catheter or tiny tube is used to break through the calcium and cholesterol deposits and shave off and remove the build-up in larger arteries.

HEART STENTS
A heart – or coronary – stent is a metal sleeve used to keep an artery open after angioplasty or atherectomy. The placement of the stent helps keep the artery from closing up again after the procedure. The stent is placed during a procedure in the cardiac catheterization lab and surgery is not needed.

TILT TABLE TEST
This simple, non-surgical test is for people who have had a loss of consciousness caused by either
a slow heart rate or falling blood pressure. During the tilt table test, an IV is inserted. You will lay on
a table that will be tilted upright, for about 30 to 45 minutes, while your blood pressure and pulse are
watched and recorded.

PACEMAKER
A pacemaker is a device which automatically regulates the heart rate. Placing the pacemaker is a minor surgical procedure, done with local anesthetic and light sedation.

DEFIBRILLATOR
The automatic implantable defibrillator (AICD) which finds and fixes an irregular heart rate – or arrhythmias – either by correcting it or delivering a shock.
