ACCREDITATION

Clark Memorial Hospital’s cancer program is accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, a high distinction for cancer programs in the United States.

This approval means that Clark Memorial Hospital meets national standards that have been established to ensure cancer patients receive the best care, and the hospital participates in a nationwide program dedicated to progressing cancer care and treatment.

Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1932, the Approval Program sets rigorous standards for cancer programs and reviews them to ensure they conform to those standards. Recognizing that cancer is a complex group of diseases, the program promotes consultation among surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists, resulting in improved patient care.

The Commission’s approval ensures Clark Memorial patients have access to:

  • Quality care close to home
  • Comprehensive care offering a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
  • A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinating the best treatment options available to cancer patients
  • Information about cancer clinical trials, education, and support
  • Lifelong patient follow-up through a cancer registry
  • On-going monitoring and improvement of care.

Approval by the Commission on Cancer is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer, while undergoing a rigorous evaluation process and review of its performance. The Commission is composed of Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and other members representing 36 national cancer-related organizations. They develop postgraduate courses, symposia, and programs about cancer for health care professionals involved in cancer care.
