Nurse Extern Program
Description Clark
Memorial Hospital is offering an externship program this summer for
qualified nursing students. This program will enable the student to
supplement school experiences with patient care management and
organizational skills. It will also provide an opportunity for the
student to explore a specific clinical area of interest. The student
will work with a designated preceptor(s) in meeting the program's goals
and objectives. Goals
- Enhance the student's knowledge and skills in patient care and
time management.
- Enhance the student's personal and professional growth.
- Facilitate the transition from the role of student to the role
of professional nurse.
Objectives
- Develop effective mechanisms to communicate with all members of
the health care team.
- Provide patient care using the nursing process.
- Demonstrate characteristics of a professional nurse.
- Perform selected nursing procedures competently.
- Discuss professional issues in group sessions.
- Apply nursing research to practice.
Qualifications
- Nursing student who has completed the junior year in BSN program
or has completed the first year in ADN program.
- Overall G.P.A. of 3.0. as evidenced by official transcript.
- Completion of application process with two referenced from
school of nursing; one of those must be from a clinical instructor.
Deadline for completion is March 31st.
Program Facts
- Available to work flexible shifts including weekends for 10-week
program beginning in late May and ending in early August of each year.
(2007 Program will tentatively run from May 21st through August
3rd).
- The 10-week program will allow the extern the opportunity to
study for eight weeks in his/her chosen area of interest and rotate
to two alternate departments (one week each) for exposure to
additional nursing experiences.
- Upon completion of the program, the student may choose to
continue working as a PRN employee in an extern role, enabling the
student to continue to prepare for the transition from student to
nurse.
Selection Process
- Screening of all applications by Review Committee.
- Interview with Nurse Manager and peer group in area(s) of
interest. The student may choose two areas of interest, including
Medical/Surgical Units, Ortho/Neuro Unit, Oncology, Critical Care
Units, Behavioral Health Services and Emergency Services.
