Urology - The Continence Center
What is
Incontinence?
Incontinence is the loss of bowel or
bladder control. It is important to know that
incontinence is not a disease, but a symptom of
an underlying condition. Incontinence can become
a devastating medical, social and psychological
problem. It is not a normal part of aging,
and affects both men and women of all ages.
The most common types
of urinary incontinence are:
- Stress
incontinence - the accidental loss
of urine with sneezing, coughing, lifting
or physical movement.
- Urge
incontinence - the accidental loss
of urine associated with an overwhelming
desire to use the toilet and the
inability to reach the restroom in time.
- Overflow
incontinence - caused when the
bladder does not empty properly and urine
spills over.
- Mixed
incontinence - experiencing more
than one type of incontinence at the same
time.
There is
Help...
Loss of bladder control can be hard to
talk about, even with your doctor. But when it
becomes a problem for you, it's time to find
help.
Fortunately, help is
available. Urinary incontinence is treatable and
often does not require surgery. In fact, today,
almost every form of incontinence is manageable.
Help is close to home
at The Continence Center of Kentucky
and Indiana at Clark Memorial Hospital.
Solutions...
Sometimes the causes of incontinence can
be discovered through a simple history and
physical examination. At other times, a more
sophisticated evaluation is necessary.
The common forms of
treatment include behavioral techniques,
medication and various types of surgery.
Treatment programs depend on the patient's
wishes, coupled with the physician's diagnosis
and the degree of incontinence that the patient
is experiencing.
