Women's Care Place -
Your Answer to Health & Wellness
"Am I at risk for osteoporosis?" "What can I do
to prevent breast cancer?" "How can I manage my stress level?"
The Women's Care Place at Clark Memorial Hospital is
offering ongoing educational classes to answer your questions regarding health and
wellness issues like osteoporosis, breast cancer, and lifestyle modification.
Presented by professionals, these classes address the latest
information on medical issues that are important to women. We invite you to attend any of
our seminars.
Better Bones Program
This program addresses the risk factors, diagnosis, treatment methods and the
role of diet and exercise in the prevention of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis, a disease that
causes bones to become thin and weak, affects more than 25 million people, primarily
post-menopausal women.
Women at risk include those who are:
- Smokers and/or heavy drinkers
- Milk intolerant or has a low calcium intake
- Suffering from chronic intestinal disorders and living an
inactive lifestyle
- Taking thyroid medication or steroid-based medications for
asthma, arthritis or cancer
- From a family with a history of osteoporosis
- Approaching or past menopause
- Thin or small framed
- Light-skinned
At Clark Memorial Hospital, our Better Bones Program puts an array of benefits and
resources, from counseling on nutrition, exercise and lifestyle change to educational
programs on treatment and prevention methods, at your disposal. Clark Memorial Hospital
also employs the latest technology to diagnose the early warning signs of osteoporosis,
DXA scanning. In less than thirty minutes, the DXA scans areas prone to bone loss such as
the hips and spine. Your bone mineral density levels are then compared with normal values
to determine whether bone loss has occurred.
