Women's Diagnostic Imaging Center

The Women's The Diagnostic Imaging Center at Clark Memorial Hospital is located off the main lobby atrium across from the elevators. This is where women can get their mammograms, ultrasounds, DXA scans (used to test for osteoporosis), and stereotactic breast biopsies performed in one convenient and centralized location.

Compared to more conventional surgical biopsies, a stereotactic breast biopsy, The Mammo test, offers many benefits to our patients. It is less painful and less invasive therefore requires less recovery time. The highly accurate stereotactic breast biopsies are performed on an outpatient basis here in the Women's Diagnostic Imaging Center. Physicians will order the Mammotest after an abnormality like a lump or a lesion is found in the breast. If a lump or a lesion is found be prepared, but don't panic. 80% are non-cancerous.

Also housed in the Women's Diagnostic Imaging Center is a resource library, complete with literature, video and audio tapes on women's medical issues.

We are continuing our focus on women's health by providing a convenient location to meet the diagnostic imaging needs of women.

The center demonstrates our commitment to educating women about the specific illnesses that affect them.

According to the American Cancer Society, one out of nine American women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime.

Thanks to modern technology and improved treatment techniques 95% of early diagnosedand treated breast cancer patients return to good health and resume active lifestyles. Regular mammograms and check-ups will ensure early detection.

The need for a mammogram depends upon your age, symptoms, medical history, and risk factors, including:

  • A personal history of breast cancer
  • Mother or sister with breast cancer
  • Onset of menstruation before age 12, menopause after age 55
  • Having never given birth or first birth after age 30
  • Overweight.

Women not in high-risk categories should have a reference or "baseline" mammogram when they are 35-40 y years of age. Women age 40-50 should have a mammogram at least every two years. Women over 50 should have mammograms annually.

At Clark Memorial Hospital, we recognize the importance of mammography in every woman's health program. Please take advantage of our mammogram services along with the latest low-radiation mammography equipment here at the Women's Diagnostic Center and stop any cancer before it starts.
