Should You Consider Lung Cancer Screening?

Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. It's also one of the most successfully treated cancers if found in the early stage. Lung cancer screening is a painless procedure to detect lung cancer in people who don't have symptoms. Using a low-dose CT scan, doctors can detect lung cancer not visible on chest x-rays. More than 80% of cancers found have been in the earliest stages when they're more treatable.

You should consider having a lung screening if you:

  • Are between the age of 55-74
  • Have at least a 30 pack-year history of smoking? For example, smoking 2 packs per day for 15 years is 30 pack-years
  • Currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years

Because prevention and screening are so important to lung health, Clark Memorial offers a $110 CT lung screening program for at-risk individuals whose insurance plan does not cover the cost. This special cash price saves patients who meet eligibility requirements approximately $300 in out-of-pocket expenses.
